Jack's drinking is a running gag, and this is the sequel's one-line version of it: a man who is shown the answer to his own question by walking into it. It deliberately echoes the famous 'why is the rum gone?' from the first film, so the two are often merged or misattributed. It is the standard caption for an empty bottle, glass or tub of ice cream.

This joke comes from a scene that is not in the theatrical cut of Dead Man's Chest (2006) but appears among the deleted scenes on the DVD and Blu-ray, 'Steady As She Goes'. Captain Jack Sparrow asks why the rum is always gone, then stands up and staggers into a wall, and says 'Oh. That's why.' The question echoes his outrage in the first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), when Elizabeth Swann burns the island's rum to make a smoke signal and he demands to know why the rum is gone.
