Miranda Priestly

By all means, move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Miranda's whole method in one sentence: contempt delivered as politeness, so quietly that the victim has to work out they have been insulted. The screenwriter herself put it beside the florals line as the film's slow, light punch to the self-esteem. People now use it, deadpan, on anyone dawdling over an email or a menu.

Spoilers for The Devil Wears PradaShow the scene

At Runway, Andy arrives to go over the seating chart for Miranda's upcoming luncheon and says she has it right here. Miranda answers with this line, then starts rearranging the table: Snoop Dogg must move to hers, which Andy points out is already full, and a remark that a guest named Stephen is not coming turns into a curt exchange about whether Andy still has to fetch him from the airport. The scene drifts into one of the few moments where Miranda lets the press coverage of her divorce show, before she snaps back to business.
