Edna Mode

Luck favors the prepared, darling.

— The Incredibles • 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Edna's whole creed in five words: be ready for the thing you cannot name. The joke is that she is entirely right, because the baby Helen thinks is powerless is about to show powers nobody expected. It has since become a dressed-up version of 'fortune favours the prepared', quoted on exam-season posters and by anyone who packed an umbrella.

Spoilers for The IncrediblesShow the scene

Helen Parr visits the fashion designer Edna Mode, known as E, to find out whether she has been repairing her husband's super suit. Edna is delighted to show off the new suits she has made for the whole family, starting with the baby's: cut roomy for free movement, soft on sensitive skin, bulletproof, and able to withstand over a thousand degrees. When Helen asks what on earth the baby will be doing, Edna answers that she doesn't know, darling: luck favors the prepared. Helen says Jack-Jack has no powers, and Edna shrugs that he will look fabulous anyway. Brad Bird, the film's director, voices Edna himself.
