Syndrome

You sly dog! You got me monologuing!

— The Incredibles ‧ 2004

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that Syndrome knows the villain's cardinal sin and commits it anyway, then blames the hero for it. It gave the internet a word: a villain who explains the plan, aloud, to the person he should be silencing. Fans use it in game, fiction and everyday arguments when someone talks themselves into trouble, and writers still reference it whenever a bad guy starts a speech.

Spoilers for The IncrediblesShow the scene

On Nomanisan, Syndrome has just revealed himself to Mr. Incredible as the grown-up Buddy Pine, the boy once told to fly home because the hero worked alone. Pinned in his zero-point energy field, Bob apologises, and Syndrome is warming up to the speech about the weapon only he can defeat when he stops himself and laughs: you sly dog, you got me monologuing. He then boasts about the technology holding Bob and throws him around until Bob slips away. The gag is set up earlier, when Bob and Lucius complain over a night out about villains who start monologuing instead of finishing the job.
