Stop trying to hit me and hit me!
— The Matrix · 1999
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The speaker urges the listener to stop straining and calculating an attack and simply strike. Paradoxically it asks for real action instead of hesitant attempts, contrasting effortful trying with committed doing. The tone is challenging and instructive, pushing the addressee past self-doubt.

Inside the sparring program, Morpheus has been beating Neo with ease, and Neo blames it on Morpheus being too fast. Morpheus asks whether he really thinks strength or speed has anything to do with muscles in that place, and as the crew crowd round the monitors to watch, he goads Neo with this. Mouse can't believe what he's seeing, Neo says he knows what Morpheus is trying to do, and Morpheus tells him he is trying to free his mind.
