Neo

Why do my eyes hurt?

— The Matrix  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

In six words the film admits that everything Neo has seen so far was a simulation: his eyes hurt because this is the first time they have worked. Morpheus's answer is the line the audience remembers, a calm, factual reply to a bewildered question. People quote it whenever they come out of a cinema, a long night or a screen, blinking.

Neo has just been pulled out of the Matrix and picked up by the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar. Morpheus welcomes him to the real world and tells Trinity they have found him. Neo lies on a table with needles in his body and asks what they are doing. Morpheus tells him his muscles have atrophied and are being rebuilt. Neo asks why his eyes hurt. Morpheus replies that he has never used them before, tells him to rest, and promises that the answers are coming.
