Spoon boy

Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.

— The Matrix ‧ 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The lesson is a Zen koan delivered by a child: the rules of the Matrix are agreements, so stop fighting the object and change how you see it. The film comes back to the idea when Neo repeats it during the rescue. 'There is no spoon' is the Matrix line people quote even when they have never seen the film.

Spoilers for The MatrixShow the scene

While Neo waits in the Oracle's apartment with the other potentials, a boy with a shaved head and robes sits bending a spoon with his mind. He offers the spoon to Neo and tells him not to try to bend it, because that is impossible. He should instead realise the truth: there is no spoon. Then Neo will see that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only himself. Neo then bends the spoon, his first hint of his own powers.
