You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line reduces the film to a single choice: comfort, or a truth that may hurt. It has outlived the film as a metaphor, and 'red pill' has become a stock phrase for any waking-up moment. For fans it is still the best-known invitation in science fiction.

Spoilers for The MatrixShow the scene

The Matrix (1999). Trinity has brought Neo to Morpheus, who tells him that he is a slave, born into a prison for his mind that nobody can be told about, and that he has to see it for himself. He offers two pills. The blue one ends the story: Neo wakes in his bed and believes whatever he wants. The red one is the offer in this line. Neo takes the red pill and wakes in a pod in the real world. The film was written and directed by the Wachowskis.
