Willy Wonka

The snozzberries taste like snozzberries.

— Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory • 1971

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is that Wonka's most imaginative invention gets the most circular description possible. Snozzberries are made up, so the only thing to say about their taste is that they taste like themselves, and a confident deadpan does the rest. Fans quote it for any flavour, idea or explanation that explains nothing, and the lickable wallpaper stays one of the film's best-loved gags.

Wonka stops the group in a corridor to show off lickable wallpaper for nursery walls, printed with fruit. He tells them an orange tastes like an orange and a pineapple like a pineapple, and the children lick away: Mike finds a plum, Charlie a banana. Wonka urges them to try more, then offers this line about the snozzberries. Veruca asks who ever heard of a snozzberry, and Wonka answers by grabbing her jaw and reciting "We are the music makers", from Arthur O'Shaughnessy. On the real set the wallpaper was not actually flavoured.
