In a corridor papered with giant painted strawberries and fruit, Veruca Salt in a red coat and ringlets folds her arms and scowls while the other visitors lick the walls and Willy Wonka waits at the far end.

Snozzberries? Who ever heard of a snozzberry?

— Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory • 1971

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Veruca asks the question the audience is asking, and the film's answer is that in this factory you do not get one. It is the 1971 film's purest nonsense flavour: an invented fruit that tastes of itself. Fans quote it as the reply to anything with a name nobody has heard of, and Veruca's sneer is half the joke.

Spoilers for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate FactoryShow the scene

After the boat ride and the Inventing Room, Wonka leads the group into a corridor of lickable wallpaper. Charlie and Grandpa Joe taste the painted fruit and marvel at how real it is. Wonka urges them on: the strawberries taste like strawberries and the snozzberries taste like snozzberries. Veruca Salt, who rarely lets anything pass, scoffs that nobody ever heard of a snozzberry. Wonka's answer is to grab her jaw and recite two lines of poetry at her.
