Our interpretation.
Tracey presents the patient’s naivety as so remarkable that one person’s laughter cannot do it justice. The exaggeration makes the amusement sound communal even though nobody else has been invited yet. Its sharpness comes from the gap between a patient’s openness and the response being entertained.
