There's always money in the banana stand.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It sounds like a dad's empty reassurance, and it turns out to be the most literal sentence on the show. That makes it Arrested Development in one line: the clue is said out loud, plainly, and nobody listens. Fans still repeat it to mean the answer was right in front of us, and the burnt stand became shorthand for the show's running jokes.

Spoilers for Arrested DevelopmentShow the scene

In "Top Banana" (Arrested Development, season 1, episode 2, November 9, 2003), Michael visits his father George Sr. in prison while hunting for flight records, and George assures him there is always money in the banana stand, the family's frozen-banana stall. Michael puts his son George Michael in charge of the stand and later helps him burn it down as a gesture of defiance. Told what has happened, George Sr. is furious: there was $250,000 lining its walls.
