Four college friends carve jack-o'-lanterns at a newspaper-covered table in a cluttered basement by lamplight, a glum blonde hollowing out her pumpkin among a grinning joker, a redhead and a friend with dyed hair.

Buffy

I was just thinking about the life of a pumpkin. Grow up in the sun, happily entwined with others, and then someone comes along, cuts you open, and rips your guts out.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Buffy is doing what she does all season at college: taking a gut-punch and wrapping it in a joke, this time about a vegetable. She has just been burned by Parker, and the pumpkin is plainly standing in for her. It stays quotable as the funniest way to say that something which grew up happy and open ended up hollowed out.

Spoilers for Buffy the Vampire SlayerShow the scene

In "Fear, Itself", the fourth episode of Buffy's fourth season (written by David Fury, first aired 26 October 1999), the gang carves jack-o'-lanterns in Xander's basement ahead of Halloween. Xander, Willow and Oz tease Xander's pumpkin for coming out more sardonic than scary, and Buffy, still moping over her brush-off from Parker, cuts in with this gloomy thought about the life of a pumpkin. Xander moves straight on to his plan for a Halloween movie night, which goes wrong when the video store sends the wrong film.
