Mal: What does that make us? Zoe: Big damn heroes, sir. Mal: Ain't we just.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is Firefly's whole attitude in three beats: a crew of smugglers and misfits who will never admit to being good people, and who turn up to rescue their own anyway. Zoe's flat delivery and Mal's pleased reply make it funny and moving at once. Fans took 'big damn heroes' as a phrase for anyone who arrives just in time, and it remains one of the show's most-quoted exchanges.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

In the Firefly episode "Safe" (2002, written by Drew Z. Greenberg and directed by Michael Grossman), River has been accused of witchcraft in the village of Jiangyin and is about to be burned on a pyre with her brother Simon beside her. Serenity swoops in over the crowd, with Jayne aiming a rifle from the cargo door. Captain Mal Reynolds and his second-in-command Zoe walk up on foot. Mal says they have arrived in the nick of time and asks what that makes them. Zoe answers dryly, and Mal agrees. He then covers the villagers with a shotgun and demands his crew back.
