Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

River's deadpan dark joke, delivered the moment after the violence, shows how unpredictably dangerous and playful she is at this point in the series. It pays off a running feud with Jayne, who has been the crew's loudest bully. Fans quote it as shorthand for a perfectly timed, perfectly cold quip.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

In "Ariel" (Firefly, 2002), Serenity has reached the Core world of Ariel, and Jayne has been needling the Tam siblings all through the trip. In the galley he spits on his knife to sharpen it, Wash cracks that doctors are awful, then excuses Simon from the joke, and Jayne grins that leaving people out would be rude. River, unnoticed, has taken a carving knife from the rack and slashes Jayne across the chest. Her only comment is the line. Afterwards Jayne demands that she and Simon be dumped on Ariel, which Mal refuses.
