A grinning pilot lounges at a starship's controls with his boots up, holding a toy dinosaur, more toy dinosaurs on the dashboard and a ringed planet outside, a woman watching from the doorway.

Wash

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

— Firefly  ·  2002

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Wash does melodrama for an audience of one, and it tells you everything about him: a man flying a smuggler's ship by the seat of his pants who still plays with toys. The line is stock villain-speech turned on its head, and fans reach for it whenever a betrayal was entirely foreseeable. After Wash dies, the dinosaurs stay on the pilot's station as a tribute.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

In the Firefly pilot, "Serenity", pilot Hoban 'Wash' Washburne sits at his bridge console playing with toy dinosaurs. He voices a stegosaurus that claims a fertile land, and an allosaurus that suggests calling it the stegosaurus's grave. The stegosaurus answers with this line, and the allosaurus laughs an evil laugh. The game ends when Wash spots an Alliance cruiser closing in and orders Kaylee to cut all power. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, "Serenity" was the two-hour pilot but was not the first episode shown; it aired on 20 December 2002.
