River, you don't fix the Bible. / It's broken. It doesn't make sense.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The scene is the show's neatest picture of its two opposites: River, whose damaged mind sees every inconsistency, and Book, who has made peace with the unexplained. His answer, that faith fixes you rather than the reverse, is the line fans reach for when someone treats belief as a bug to be patched. River's cut-and-paste Bible also hints at the mix of insight and illness that the series and the film Serenity later explain.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

The exchange is from "Jaynestown", Firefly's seventh episode (Fox, 18 October 2002, written by Ben Edlund). While the rest of the crew deals with a smuggling job on Canton, Shepherd Book walks into Serenity's common area and finds River at work on his Bible with pens, glue and loose pages, rearranging it to remove its contradictions. She tells him it is broken and does not make sense. Book answers that it is not about making sense but about faith, and that you do not fix faith: it fixes you. River stays unconvinced and keeps the pages she cut out.
