Ship like this, be with you till the day you die. / Because it's a death trap.
— Firefly ‧ 2002
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Mal sells the ship to his sergeant the way he sells everything, with total conviction against all the evidence, and Zoe answers with the straight-faced understatement that is her signature. The joke runs both ways: Serenity is a death trap, and it does stay with him until the end, so he is right in the way she fears. Fans quote it for any beloved wreck, whether a car, a flat or a PC.

The exchange comes from the flashbacks of "Out of Gas", Firefly's eighth episode (Fox, 25 October 2002, written by Tim Minear). While the present-day Serenity drifts with failing life support, Mal remembers the day he first walked his new ship's cargo bay with Zoe, just after paying for it. The salesman has promised it will stay with the buyer for life; Zoe thinks Mal was robbed. Mal insists the wreck is solid and that a ship like this will be with him until the day he dies. Zoe's dry reply is that it is a death trap, and Mal brushes it aside with a speech about freedom.
