Rory

I live in two worlds. One is a world of books.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Rory's bookishness is put into words as a choice between two lives, and she picks the one with people in it. For fans it is the show's thesis, and the line gets quoted on graduation cards. The twist is that the book list is a love letter to reading while the punchline is a thank-you to her mother.

Spoilers for Gilmore GirlsShow the scene

In the Season 3 finale, "Those Are Strings, Pinocchio", Rory graduates from Chilton as valedictorian, introduced by Headmaster Charleston. She opens her speech by welcoming the guests and thanking friends and teachers, then says she lives in two worlds. The first is a world of books: Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha County, the whaler Pequod, Huck's raft, Anna Karenina's train and Swann's Way. The second, she says, is far superior, populated by real people, led by her grandparents Richard and Emily and above all by her mother Lorelai, the person she most wanted to be.
