Lorelai

I am attracted to pie, but I do not feel the need to date pie.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the show's rapid-fire logic at its best: a flirtation turned into a debate, with a joke about dessert as the sharpest rebuttal. Lorelai says yes to the coffee and no to the romance, and for a while she sticks to it. Fans quote it as a reply to anyone who confuses attraction with a plan.

Spoilers for Gilmore GirlsShow the scene

In "Cinnamon's Wake" (Season 1, episode 5, 2 November 2000), Rory's English teacher Max Medina asks Lorelai out at the Chilton bake sale and she cannot agree, so he settles for a coffee that is meant to look like a chance meeting away from school. Max says they should date because they both want to. Lorelai replies that she wants to be in the Bangles, but that does not mean she should buy a guitar and ruin her life. When he says they are attracted to each other, she answers with the pie line.
