Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Five words that explain Lorelai's relationship with caffeine and, by extension, the show's. The coffee-drip image is a perfect little cartoon, and fans with a mug have been quoting it ever since. It is also an early sign of Luke's grudging soft spot for her.

On Rory's first day at Chilton, in "The Lorelais' First Day at Chilton" (Season 1, episode 2, 12 October 2000), Lorelai oversleeps, hurries into town in casual clothes and begs Luke for coffee. He offers herbal tea, and she answers that every morning for her is a coffee morning and this one is a jumbo coffee morning. She asks for coffee in an I.V.
