On a sunny film set, a hulking actor in a green superhero suit rubs his eyes under oversized goggles beside a boy sidekick in costume, with a camera crane and crew around them.

The goggles do nothing!

— The Simpsons  ·  1989

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The goggles are meant to protect him and plainly don't, so the line is the sound of a safeguard failing at the worst moment. Fans quote it for any warning, disclaimer or precaution that turns out to be useless, and for the horror of seeing something you cannot unsee. Underneath is a gag about an industry that treats danger as someone else's problem.

Spoilers for The SimpsonsShow the scene

The line comes from "Radioactive Man" (The Simpsons, season 7, episode 2, aired September 24, 1995; written by John Swartzwelder). A Hollywood studio comes to Springfield to film the comic-book hero Radioactive Man, with local action star Rainier Wolfcastle, a Schwarzenegger parody, in the title role and Milhouse cast as the sidekick Fallout Boy. On the chaotic shoot, whose casual attitude to caustic materials a reviewer later noted, Wolfcastle cries out that the goggles do nothing. The production eventually collapses when Milhouse quits.
