Comic Book Guy

Last night's 'Itchy and Scratchy Show' was, without a doubt, the worst episode ever. Rest assured, I was on the internet within minutes, registering my disgust throughout the world.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

An early-internet joke about online fandom that has never dated. Comic Book Guy is the archetypal entitled fan: a loyal viewer who treats every disappointment as a debt owed to him, and who posts his verdict to the whole world within minutes. Bart's answer is the show talking back to its own critics. The line is quoted whenever fans pile on a finale, a reboot or a sequel, usually aimed at the quoter themselves.

Spoilers for The SimpsonsShow the scene

In "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show", the fourteenth episode of season eight, the cartoon-within-the-cartoon introduces a new dog, Poochie, voiced by Homer, to save its ratings. The debut is a disaster. Afterwards Comic Book Guy tells Bart that last night's episode was the worst ever and that he had already posted his disgust online. Bart asks what right he has to complain. "As a loyal viewer, I feel they owe me," Comic Book Guy answers, and falls back on three words: "Worst episode ever."
