What did you just say about my hair?

— JoJo's Bizarre Adventure · 2012

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is a tripwire. Easygoing and kind in every other way, Josuke turns violent at once when his hair is insulted, and Koichi reads it as loyalty to the man who saved him as a child. It became a catchphrase with a tone: a polite warning just before the punches. The fighting games even give every character a unique insult for it.

Spoilers for JoJo's Bizarre AdventureShow the scene

Josuke Higashikata's hair is the one thing he will not hear mocked. In the first episode of Diamond Is Unbreakable, "Jotaro Kujo! Meets Josuke Higashikata" (1 April 2016), Josuke calmly takes bullying from older students until one disrespects his pompadour; he then strikes with his Stand, Crazy Diamond. Later Jotaro inadvertently insults the style, which sparks a short fight, and at the end of the day a robber's remark sets him off again. The fandom wiki renders the line as "What did you say about my hair?"
