Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Joseph is a trickster who wins by being one step ahead, and the taunt is how he shows it off: the villain has lost before he speaks. It grew from a fight habit into one of JoJo's best-known gags, and the All Star Battle fighting game gives it a counter move with the line as its name. Fans use it whenever someone's reply is entirely predictable.

Spoilers for JoJo's Bizarre AdventureShow the scene

Joseph Joestar's trademark taunt is naming his enemy's next line before they say it, and he is shown to be right every time. It runs through Battle Tendency, the 2012 anime's second arc, and its final episode, "The Ascendant One" (6 April 2013), has Joseph launch the transformed Kars into space, claiming he planned it all just to annoy him. The English dub has Kars react to the prediction with "How do you always know?" before saying it anyway, a beat not in the Japanese or the manga.
