Detroit Smash!

— My Hero Academia  ·  2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the name of the thing the whole series is about: a power handed from one hero to another. The shout is All Might's at first, and every time Izuku repeats it, it tells the audience how far he has come. The English-sounding names of the series' smashes, and Detroit Smash in particular, are among its best-known fan imitations: anyone who punches a table while shouting a place name is quoting it.

Spoilers for My Hero AcademiaShow the scene

Detroit Smash is All Might's signature punch in My Hero Academia (Bones, 2016), a move that focuses the stockpiled power of the One For All Quirk into a single fist; at full strength it can change the weather. It debuts in the first chapter of the manga, and in the anime in episode 2, when All Might uses it to save Izuku and Katsuki from the Sludge Villain. Izuku, who inherits One For All, first uses the move at 100% in the Battle Trial (episode 7), then dials it down to 5% against Stain, and later fires an Overdrive-boosted version against Tomura in the Final War.
