All Might

You can become a hero.

— My Hero Academia ‧ 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line is the series' turning point. Izuku has spent his whole life being told no, by a doctor, a bully and even his idol an hour earlier; the yes lands because All Might has just watched him act and has nothing to gain by flattering him. It also frames the show's idea of a hero as someone who moves first, and fans quote it as the line that tells the underdog they are allowed in.

Spoilers for My Hero AcademiaShow the scene

In the first episode of My Hero Academia (Bones, 2016), Izuku Midoriya, a boy born without a Quirk, meets his idol All Might on a rooftop and asks whether a Quirkless person can be a hero. All Might tells him he cannot say so: a pro hero must be ready to risk their life. The answer comes in episode 2, "What It Takes to Be a Hero" (aired in Japan on 10 April 2016). Izuku has charged at the Sludge Villain holding Katsuki Bakugo, moving before he could even think. All Might finds him afterwards, tells him that is what the top heroes did, and, as Izuku cries, tells him he can become a hero.
