All Might

Go beyond! Plus Ultra!

— My Hero Academia • 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It turns a school motto into a way of life: whatever you are, push past it. All Might lives that out by smashing through his own limits, and Izuku inherits the habit, so the phrase ends up as the series' theme as much as its slogan. It is also a real motto with a long history, which suits a hero academy's gate.

Spoilers for My Hero AcademiaShow the scene

"Go beyond! Plus Ultra!" is the official motto of U.A. High School, the hero academy where the series is set, and it is All Might's rallying cry. Plus Ultra is Latin for "further beyond". A defining use in the first season comes in episode 12, the U.S.J. attack: after a long fight with the Nomu, All Might throws it high into the air, lands, tells it to remember the words "Plus Ultra!" and punches it out of the facility. The wiki does not name a first appearance for the phrase, so no earlier use is claimed here.
