All Might

Plus Ultra!

— My Hero Academia • 2016

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' ethos in two Latin words: whatever your limit is, go one step past it. All Might shouts it as a battle cry and a lesson, and the school turns it into a culture of pushing past what you thought you could do. Fans use it as a gym and exam motto, and the phrase has a second life as a history joke, since a Japanese hero school shares its slogan with the arms of Spain.

Plus Ultra is the official motto of U.A. High School, the hero academy of My Hero Academia, printed as "Go beyond! Plus Ultra!" on the school's wiki entry; the Latin means "further beyond" and is also the national motto of Spain. All Might, the Symbol of Peace, makes it his signature shout. Its biggest showing in the anime is season 1, episode 12 ("All Might"), set in the USJ training facility: after a long exchange of blows, he tells the Nomu to remember the words "Plus Ultra" and sends it flying out of the dome with a final smash. The students then learn it took three hundred blows to do what five would have done in his prime.
