Arthur's consciousness approached his body as from a great distance, and reluctantly. It had had some bad times in there. Slowly, nervously, it entered and settled down in to its accustomed position.

Arthur's mind is pictured as a wary tenant returning to a home it has good reason to distrust. It comes back slowly and unwillingly, remembering earlier misery there, and only after nervous hesitation does it settle into its familiar place. The tone is dry, comic and quietly sympathetic.
