Hellboy

Don’t mess with me, lady. I’ve been drinking with skeletons.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Hellboy answers a supernatural encounter with the irritation of someone whose evening has been interrupted. The absurd defence is also entirely literal in his world. His weary lack of awe keeps the cosmic mythology grounded in a recognisable personality.

Spoilers for HellboyShow the scene

Hellboy delivers this in The Island #1 (2005), collected in Strange Places. He has been drinking with dead sailors in a ruined island tavern when a woman confronts him. The skeleton-filled drinking session belongs to The Island, rather than Wake the Devil. David Petersen's anniversary discussion independently identifies the scene and quotes the line.
