Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Hellboy's short response punctures the scale of the threat. He is neither immune to fear nor inclined to give a monster the satisfaction of an impressive speech. The understatement makes an impossible predicament feel like another bad turn in a long working day.

‘Oh crap’ is Hellboy's recurring response to trouble. The Island #1 (2005) supplies a comic-specific example at the end of its encounter with an immense sea creature; The Island #2 also opens with the words as he wonders whether he is dead. The original-art description and the next issue's first-line index corroborate this form. The page treats it as a recurring catchphrase, rather than a unique standalone utterance.
