Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The plain insult is a refusal to treat prophecy as an order. Hellboy answers a grand account of what he is supposed to become with his own stubborn choice. The brevity makes the defiance feel personal and immediate.

At the climax of Hellboy: Wake the Devil #5 (1996), an iron maiden draws Hellboy into a void. Voices of Chaos call him Anung Un Rama and insist on the destiny attached to that name. His horns grow back, and he answers with this refusal before breaking them off. The scene makes his rejection of that destiny an action as well as a speech.
