Santa! Oh, my God! Santa, here? I know him!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Only Buddy would hear a store promotion as a family reunion. The line is pure childlike joy, and fans shout it whenever something they love is coming to town. It sets up the film's sharpest comic collision, between a believer and a world that has turned belief into a photo opportunity.

Still in the Gimbels toy department on his first day, Buddy listens as the manager calls the staff together. The manager announces that Santa is coming to town the next morning at 10 a.m. to take photographs with the children. Buddy erupts in delight, certain that the Santa he grew up with is about to walk through the door, and cries out that he knows him. The next morning's Santa turns out to be an impostor.
