We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a perfect piece of elf logic: serious, confident and nutritionally appalling. Buddy's diet became the film's signature running gag, and his syrup-on-everything habit has inspired countless recipes, snack-table jokes and Christmas-party menus. Fans quote it whenever a plate looks all sugar, and the line shows how completely he believes in the elves' world.

Spoilers for ElfShow the scene

At the Hobbs family dinner table in New York, Buddy has covered his spaghetti in maple syrup, to the alarm of Walter and young Michael. Emily asks whether he likes sugar, and Buddy checks that syrup contains it. When she says yes, he cheerfully explains the elf diet: the four main food groups are candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. Emily then invites him to stay, and Buddy says he was thinking of staying forever.
