Buddy

Smiling's my favorite.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Buddy's whole philosophy in four words, delivered to a boss who wants him sullen like everyone else. The joke is that nobody in the grown-up world has an answer to it. Fans repeat it as a motto and a quiet rebuke to cynicism, and it sits on mugs, doormats and the Christmas cards of people who have watched the film every December since 2003.

Spoilers for ElfShow the scene

Buddy has only just reached New York when a Gimbels manager mistakes him for a new employee and marches him into the toy department. After a brisk telling-off for wandering the shop floor, Buddy gazes at the store's Christmas set and takes it for the real North Pole, which the manager flatly denies. The manager asks why he is smiling so much. Buddy answers with total honesty that he just likes to smile, and that smiling is his favourite. He is told to make work his favourite instead. It is also where he first meets Jovie.
