Buddy

You sit on a throne of lies!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Buddy is the only honest person in a store full of paid pretending, and he treats a mall Santa like a counterfeit banknote. The line works because it is both ridiculous and grandly accusatory, said with total sincerity. Fans quote it at anyone caught bluffing, from office managers to politicians, and the beef-and-cheese insult that follows is just as often repeated.

Spoilers for ElfShow the scene

The morning after Buddy's all-night decorating spree, Gimbels' department-store Santa arrives to meet the children. Buddy, who grew up with the real Santa at the North Pole, spots a fraud at once. As the first boy in line, Paul, sits down, Buddy accuses the man of sitting on a throne of lies. He adds that the man smells of beef and cheese, then yanks off the fake beard. The children scream, and the scuffle that follows wrecks the toy-department display before the store manager pulls the Santa away.
