Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
A grown man in yellow tights has just been hit in the face and the strongest word he knows is a Christmas toy. That is Buddy in miniature: a person whose innocence survives even pain. It has become a family-friendly stand-in for something stronger, shouted by people everywhere when they stub a toe, drop a mug or lose a game, and it is a gift on seasonal tees.

Buddy has spent hours waiting outside Michael Hobbs's school for the half-brother he has never met, and he catches up with the boy in the snowy street. Michael is unimpressed by the oversized coat and the questions, and tells him to go away. Out of nowhere a snowball hits Buddy in the face from behind a rock, and he yelps this substitute swear. Michael's bullies are the culprits. Buddy then shows them that elves have deadly aim, wins the snowball fight and wins Michael over.
