Tony Stark

Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

— Marvel's The Avengers • 2012

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Stark's answer is the clearest four-beat summary of who he is, brash and unashamed, and it works because the person who says it is also right. It is the line fans borrow whenever they want to claim a list of grand titles for themselves. The comedy is that the insult is answered with a list the audience already agrees with.

Spoilers for Marvel's The AvengersShow the scene

On the Helicarrier in Marvel's The Avengers (2012), the newly gathered heroes are fighting about Fury's plans for the Tesseract and Loki's scheme. Bruce Banner says the group is a chemical mixture that makes chaos, Stark shrugs it off, and Steve Rogers rounds on him. Rogers sneers that without his suit of armour Stark is nothing. Stark answers by calmly reciting four words about himself, while Black Widow shrugs in grudging agreement. Rogers then calls him out for fighting only for himself.
