Joker

Do I really look like a guy with a plan? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The Joker admits he has no master plan, which makes him more frightening than a mastermind: nobody can predict what he wants because he does not know either. Fans reach for the dog-and-car image when someone achieves chaos without a goal, and it is also a favourite for anyone who owns up to improvising their way through life.

Spoilers for The Dark KnightShow the scene

Still at Harvey Dent's bedside in The Dark Knight (2008), the Joker heads off the obvious question about what he is trying to achieve. He tells the burned district attorney that he is not a man with a plan but a dog chasing cars who would not know what to do with one if he caught it. He goes on to say that the mob, the cops and Gordon are all schemers trying to control their little worlds, while he just does things. Dent, who believed in the system, is listening.
