We’re not worthy! We’re not worthy!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Pure hero worship played as slapstick: two suburban metalheads genuflecting to a shock-rock legend who stays politely unimpressed. The bit was so quotable that it escaped the film at once and became the standard way to salute anyone whose talent humbles you, usually with a bow. The AFI put it on its list of the hundred best movie quotes.

Spoilers for Wayne's WorldShow the scene

In Wayne's World (1992), Wayne and Garth have talked their way backstage at an Alice Cooper concert in Milwaukee, where Cooper plays himself. Wayne tries small talk, and the rocker answers with a deadpan lecture on the history of Milwaukee that gets only blank stares. When the two start to leave, Cooper tells them to stay, and the pair drop to their knees and bow, chanting the line and calling themselves scum. Cooper holds out a hand as if for them to kiss. The film grew out of the recurring Saturday Night Live sketch of the same name.
