Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Charlie asks the question the audience is asking: a children's fairy tale has just sent a boat through a trippy horror sequence, and nobody explains it. The film never really answers, which is why the scene lodged in so many childhood memories. Fans quote the line after any strange experience that leaves you dazed.

Spoilers for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate FactoryShow the scene

In Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), the families of the Golden Ticket winners board a boat on the chocolate river for a ride into a dark tunnel. Strange visions and sounds flash on the walls, Wonka sings a song that gets more menacing, and the guests grow alarmed as he seems to lose control. When they come out the other end, Charlie asks what it was they had just gone through, and the group arrives at the Inventing Room. The sequence was kept despite worries, and the child actors were not warned beforehand.
