A man provides. And he does it even when he’s not appreciated, or respected, or even loved. He simply bears up and he does it. Because he’s a man.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Gus gives Walt a code, and Walt keeps it: a man's worth is measured by what he carries for his family, thanked or not. It is the flattering, dangerous thing Walt wants to hear, and it hands him a moral shield for everything he does later in the name of providing. That is why fans quote it with a smile and a shiver, and why it turns up as a meme about dads, duty and thankless work.

Spoilers for Breaking BadShow the scene
In "Más" (Season 3, episode 5, aired 18 April 2010, written by Moira Walley-Beckett), Gustavo Fring is still trying to lure Walt back to cooking. He drives him to Lavandería Brillante, an industrial laundry where a huge washing machine lifts on hydraulics to reveal a secret basement: a vast, state-of-the-art superlab. Walt is impressed but declines again, saying he has made too many bad decisions. Gus asks why he made them, and when Walt answers that it was for his family, Gus delivers this speech about what a man does.
