A battered white RV sits in the desert at sunset with a yellow hazmat suit hanging by its door, one man in the doorway and another crouched at a table of lab glassware.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Shortened and shouted, it has become the Breaking Bad catchphrase: Walt as the boss whose only concern is the work, pulling Jesse back to the lab whatever else is going on. Fans use it as a joke for any task that needs doing right now, usually with the word cook swapped for something else. It is a meme version rather than a quote from a script.

Spoilers for Breaking BadShow the scene

"Jesse, we need to cook" is a fan compression rather than a line from the script: it boils down Walt's repeated summons to the lab. The nearest real moment is the second-season episode "4 Days Out" (2009, written by Sam Catlin). Walt, who has just glimpsed a worrying spot on his lung scan, tells Jesse they must cook non-stop until Tuesday and puts it as "We have to cook," interrupting the weekend Jesse had planned with Jane. The two take the RV into the desert and keep cooking for days.
