Walt

I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger... No. I am the one who knocks!

— Breaking Bad • 2008

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

This is the moment the mild chemistry teacher stops pretending to be a victim and names himself the threat, and Skyler's face tells us she believes it. It became the show's most-quoted speech, endlessly parodied and imitated, and the phrase now serves as a punchline for anyone declaring themselves the dangerous one.

Spoilers for Breaking BadShow the scene

From "Cornered" (season 4, episode 6 of Breaking Bad, first aired 21 August 2011, written by Gennifer Hutchison). Gale Boetticher has just been killed, and Skyler White, who has been replaying Walt's voicemail and reading about the case, asks him to admit he is in danger and go to the police. Walt turns on her, says he is the one in control of a lucrative drug business, points to Gale as a man who opened his door and got shot, and ends on the line. Skyler is left stunned, and Walt peels off his shirt for a shower; she leaves with the baby soon after.
