Walt

You know exactly who I am. Say my name.

— Breaking Bad • 2008

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Walt no longer wants to be known as a man who had to do bad things; he wants the name to carry fear. It is the pivot from desperate teacher to self-made kingpin, and the title makes it the episode's identity. Fans quote it as the ultimate demand for respect, and it gave Heisenberg a place in everyday speech.

Spoilers for Breaking BadShow the scene

From "Say My Name" (season 5, episode 7 of Breaking Bad, first aired 26 August 2012, written and directed by Thomas Schnauz). In the desert, Walt, Mike and Jesse meet the drug distributor Declan to cancel an earlier methylamine deal and offer a new one: Declan sells Walt's blue meth for a 35 percent share. When Declan demands to know who Walt is, Walt answers with the line, then tells Declan he is the cook who killed Gus Fring. Told that the cartel did it, Walt repeats himself, and Declan finally says Heisenberg.
