Every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day. That's the hard part.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

After a season as a background gag, the baboon finally speaks, and it is the plainest self-help in the show: it refuses to promise that doing the hard thing ever feels good, only that it gets easier. Fans use it for gyms, sobriety, therapy and anything else that has to be done daily, and it is a favourite from a series that mostly avoids easy comfort.

Spoilers for BoJack HorsemanShow the scene

In "Out to Sea", the season 2 finale of BoJack Horseman (2015), BoJack struggles up the hill outside his house on a jog, grumbling that he hates running and that everything is terrible. He reaches the top and collapses on the grass, panting. The baboon who has jogged past his house all season stands over him and gives this advice, then jogs off. BoJack, still catching his breath, answers with one word: "Okay."
