Sometimes life's a bitch and then you keep living.

— BoJack Horseman • 2014

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Diane gives the show its answer to its own bleak refrain. The old cynical saying says life ends badly; her edit says the harder part is that it keeps going and you have to live in it. After six seasons of BoJack's self-destruction it lands as the gentlest note of hope the show allows, and fans quote it at hard moments.

Spoilers for BoJack HorsemanShow the scene

In the series finale, "Nice While It Lasted" (Season 6, episode 16, 31 January 2020), BoJack is let out of prison for a weekend to attend Princess Carolyn and Judah's wedding. He finds Diane on the roof, where she has gone out for a smoke, and the two catch up awkwardly. He tells her how his prison movie night ended up on Pieces of April every week. When he shrugs that life's a bitch and then you die, she answers with this correction, and the show ends on them looking up at the night sky in silence while "Mr. Blue" plays.
