Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the series' diagnosis in one line, delivered in the first episode by the person who knows him best and is already too tired to argue. BoJack answers with a joke about bread, which is the show's method in miniature: self-hatred, deflected with a quip. Fans quote it for the way it still hurts, and it is often paired with other lines about being unlovable.

Spoilers for BoJack HorsemanShow the scene

In the series opener "BoJack Horseman: The BoJack Horseman Story, Chapter One" (22 August 2014), BoJack and his agent and ex-girlfriend Princess Carolyn have dinner at a restaurant, where Mr. Peanutbutter keeps greeting them. She tells him they are breaking up and complains about the dinners she has wasted on him, ending with this line, which the wiki transcript renders in a slightly different form. The check arrives, BoJack grumbles about the price of the bread basket, and in the car afterwards he asks if she thinks he is getting fat.
