From behind the pilot's seat of a battered spaceship cockpit, a pilot in a Hawaiian shirt flies toward a dusty orange frontier town under a setting sun, a toy dinosaur on the dashboard.

Wash

We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm the hero!

— Firefly ‧ 2002

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Wash is the pilot who gets the crew out of trouble every week, and here he is watching Jayne win a statue and a whole town for dropping a box of money. The line has become the stock complaint of anyone whose unglamorous work goes unthanked while someone else collects the credit.

Spoilers for FireflyShow the scene

From "Jaynestown", written by Ben Edlund and directed by Marita Grabiak (first aired 18 October 2002). Serenity's crew lands on Higgins' Moon to smuggle a cargo and finds a mud statue of Jayne in the town square: years earlier he dropped a stolen box of money on the mudders' settlement of Canton and they made him a folk hero. Wash's complaint comes during the crew's time in the town, listed on the fan wiki just before Simon grumbles about his own unthanked deeds. Soon a crowd is cheering the "hero of Canton" outside the bar.
